The Autism Spectrum Center (ASC) at Boston Children’s Hospital is a multi-departmental program that provides clinical services including diagnosis and subsequent management for over 5,000 children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their families. In addition to direct clinical services, we offer family and staff education programs, electronic news and materials to prepare for and facilitate visits to our program and to other areas of the hospital as part of our Autism Friendly Hospital initiative. Appointments are available at our main Boston and Brookline campus and at multiple satellites including Waltham, Peabody, Weymouth and Lexington. We believe in family centered, collaborative and culturally informed care. We are looking to expand our Autism Spectrum Center Child Life Team with both a 32 hour and a 24 hour Certified Child Life Specialist, in addition to our current two Child Life Specialists.  Please see more about us at our new website:

This Child Life Specialist will be responsible for:

  • Working as a Child Life Specialist dedicated to the Autism Spectrum Center (ASC), which is critical for the success of BCH’s Autism Friendly Hospital Initiative. This initiative aims to improve hospital staff knowledge and skills of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), optimize the hospital environment for patients with ASD, prepare children and their families with strategies that will enhance patient experience, facilitate family’s ability to access care, and improve patient and staff safety by reducing behavioral emergencies.
  • Providing individual child life supports, including preparation, distraction, and normalization of the hospital experience, to patients with ASD in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Working collaboratively with ASC Training and Behavior Support Workgroups to develop materials and provide customized educational trainings to various departments at Boston Children’s Hospital.
  • Developing and maintain patient preparation materials, including our social narrative library (My Hospital Story).
  • Providing ASD and behavioral consultation to child life colleagues and multi-disciplinary staff. 
  • Working a schedule of either four 8-hour shifts/week (32 hour position) or three 8-hour shifts/week (24 hour/week position); some weekend day work may be required. May require working at the Main Campus as well as Brookline Place.

To qualify, you must have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Child Development, Child Life, or a closely related field with a concentration in child life.
  • 600-hour Child Life internship under the supervision of a certified child life specialist. 
  • Prior experience working with autism spectrum disorder and/or related neurdevelopmental disabilities, management skills and ability to work across departments in a collaborative model.
  • Flexibility, maturity, creativity, interest in innovation and program development. 
  • Certification in Child Life Specialist required within 1 year of hire for all new hires.
